Home Network or Access Link? Locating Last-Mile Downstream Throughput Bottlenecks

چکیده
As home networks see increasingly faster downstream throughput speeds, a natural question is whether users are benefiting from these faster speeds or simply facing performance bottlenecks in their own home networks. In this paper, we ask whether downstream throughput bottlenecks occur more frequently in their home networks or in their access ISPs. We identify lightweight metrics that can accurately identify whether a throughput bottleneck lies inside or outside a user’s home network and develop a detection algorithm that locates these bottlenecks. We validate this algorithm in controlled settings and report on two deployments, one of which included 2,652 homes across the United States. We find that wireless bottlenecks are more common than accesslink bottlenecks—particularly for home networks with downstream throughput greater than 20 Mbps, where access-link bottlenecks are relatively rare.

Measuring and Mitigating Web Performance Bottlenecks in Broadband Access Networks
We measure Web performance bottlenecks in home broadband access networks and evaluate ways to mitigate these bottlenecks with caching within home networks. We first measure Web performance bottlenecks to nine popular Web sites from more than 5,000 broadband access networks and demonstrate that when the downstream throughput of the access link exceeds about 16 Mbits/s, latency is the main bottle...
متن کاملTcp-based Video Streaming Using Receiver-driven Bandwidth Sharing
In this work we focus on the common case of streaming video to receivers whose last mile connections to the Internet are bandwith-limited and act as network bottlenecks. Users generally run multiple concurrent networking applications that compete for the scarce bandwidth resource. Standard TCP shares bottleneck link capacity according to connection round-trip time (RTT), and therefore may not p...
متن کاملEfficient Video Streaming using TCP
While most of the traffic on the Internet today consists of TCP flows, conventional wisdom holds that TCP is unsuitable for video streaming applications due to its insistence on reliability and lack of throughput guarantees. However, most streaming protocols need to implement many features of TCP including congestion control and recovery from packet loss. Additionally, using TCP for streaming i...
متن کاملDesign and Analysis of an Access Network based on PON Technology
Introduction With the expansion of services offered over the Internet, the “last mile” bottleneck problems continue to exacerbate. Passive Optical Network (PON) is a technology viewed by many as an attractive solution to this problem [1,2]. There are several topologies suitable for the access network: tree, ring, or bus (Figure 1). All transmissions in a PON are performed between Optical Line T...

In this paper, we propose a novel HiFi-WiN architecture designed to enhance the error robustness and security of first/last-mile broadband wireless access links within a metropolitan service area. The proposed architecture is capable of employing multi-hop routing for link range extension when attempting to access a mobile user that is not within direct wireless range of any WAP unit.
